Autumn: mapping for 3 days of Belgium 2008 in Arlon
It will be new survey of all areas for 3 days of Belgium. As base maps will be used
orthophoto and maps in scale 1:10000. According to information from existing o-maps and responses of the belgian sportsmen, it is possible to assume,that it will be one of the most interesting areas in Belgium.

In vicinities Arlon has passed the first month of survey. It is finished mapping 5.3 S. Km of a wood.
As base maps are used :
- orthophoto 0.65 pixels on inch (georeferenced) ;
- a national map 1:10000 (georeferenced).
Quality of base materials good.
Existing old variants of o-maps are used only for finding of terraces which are easy to miss in thickets. Some comparation old and new map you can see below.
Accomodation is organized in the sports center "Hydrion", that in 15 minutes of driving by the car to area of work. In our disposal a comfortable room, kitchen with the "filled" of food refrigerator, the constant Internet on a workplace. A meal is too good. It seems, that workers of restaurant wish to transform mappers during 3 month into " thick Karlssons "...
 The covered 235 thousand km, but serves trouble-free. We do not close it, as it is a big problem (but only not for Jean-Noel) to close or open a door of the car.
Area of survey big - nearby 18 S. Km. Pleasant for run, technically not so difficult and basically, well run. The main feature of area: a plenty of charcoal platform. They are similar on flat hill, height 10-40 sm and diameter of 5-7 meters. The quite good national symbol is applied to their designation - a brown circle. A quite good designation which can be interpreted as a small "earth bank".

Yesterday was first day in "bison" area - Bastogne. It is 40 km from Arlon. We made some jump from hanters in Arlon to "hanters free area" in Bastogne. New area is very easy. Orthophoto and basis map is good and we hope that in few day this map will be finished. In spite of the fact that today all day was rain, in two days 0,5 s.km and all ways in my part are surveyed.
15.11 "Our friends"
 "Our friends"- we name so hunters in Austria. It is known, that hunters was always against orenteering. And a meeting with them in a wood during survey is not always desirable.
As a rule organizers don't attent to contacts to hunters during survey maps. And we should avoid all time a meeting with hunters. And they in a wood appear only on the jeeps. And so, having heard noise of the motor of a jeep
a) You hide a tablet for a back of a backpack. And then you look as ordinary walking person;
b) Sharply you jump in a thricket that the hunter has not noticed you.
But this time in Belgium FRSO has tried:
for the first time we have received the detailed schedule of hunting on territories and could plan survey in different parts of a wood.
In a wood hunters clean wide opening where placed "residences" for shooting. Before hunting in a wood there are colourful information where it is specified that "passage interdit ".
A results of " plentiful love " hunters to the nature I have seen next day in the forest....
19.11 Two month behind...
During 60 days is surveyed 13,5 s. km. Average speed 4,4 days/s.km. I can say that in Arlon I'll have the highest speed in this year. This may be explained that
a) Forest has mostly good visibility b) Fluent form of the relief c) A lot of easy parts d) Good weather conditions. Minimum task was realised two weeks ago. Now we make enlagermet of area to west ( about 2.4 S.km).
25.11 Area around Chantemelle is ready!
It is big area around Chantemelle.. Location of parts you can see in google maps.
28.11. "Bison" area (Bastogne) is ready!
 Bastogne is ready. It was good area for amateur mappers. Nothing in particular. In 45 hours (including 18 hours in the rain) was surveyed 2,92 s.km.
Most interesting during drawing this area was:
a) 40% survey in the rain or snow;
b) The open area with a lot of bisons;
c) Small village Martelange that is plased between Arlon and Bastogne. At a distance 500 meters was plased in a row 12 petrol station! And only from one side from road. The answer is easy: the border between Belgien and Luxemburg is exactly in the middle of the road and all petrol station was in ... Luxemburg part where petrol is chipper.
02.12.2007 Brussel: "Les Trois Fontaines"
 30.11.2007 started work in Brussel. We make new survey o-map "Les Trois Fontaines". Area is nice with a lot of contours details. This edition will be for Belgian runners like new map: you will see another way of looking of contours and vegetation. In two days was surveyed 0.5 s.km. As basis map used Belgian national geografical map 1:10000 where position of contours is more better than in o-maps. Old maps is used only for checking teraces and some pits.
10.12.2007 Brussel: - new sprint map
It is my last week in Belguim.. In the end of my work I begun new sprint area in Brussel. Some times interesting, sometimes to complicated. In east part basis map is very good, but in the west part it is like "white paper". Each day I try to survey only 0.07. q.km. The organisers of my work make some test: "Can Orest make good sprint map with bad basis map in short time?" Yes, I can. Yesterday I saved some additional photos from Google Earth (together wit UTM 100 meter grid) and adjusted into OCAD. Together with basis map it was more helpfull.
18.12.2007 back to Ukraine
The task in Belgium is finished. During 87 days was surveyed about 20 s.km of the wood, 3 maps near Arlon, 1 - in Bastogne and two maps in Brussel. The organisation of work was perfect! Thanks Jean-Noel, Christophe, Daniel for good preparing of our work in Belgium.
